
2. Break apart the bulbs a few days before planting them.
Make sure you keep the papery husk on the cloves. You don’t want to plant the whole cloves. They will grow much better if they are broken apart. Take your time when breaking the bulbs apart. Since the papery husks are on each one, they may start to fall off if you’re not careful.
Place the cloves in a cool, dry place in the house. Don’t store them in the refrigerator. Some people like to store the bulbs in the refrigerator to keep them cool, but that’s not a good idea when you have food that you’re putting in your mouth.
The bulbs may be clean, but it’s not a good idea to take that chance. Another thing to remember is to use gloves when you break them apart. You don’t want the smell to linger on your skin since garlic is strong.
