3. Pacific Giant Blue Jay Delphinium
This selection is common throughout the hot, humid regions of North and Central America. Fortunately, thanks to its popularity among gardeners and landscapers, it’s found its way across to the Atlantic seaboard and the Gulf States as well. The Blue Jay now features in gardens across Miami and Texas, as well as other warm inland climates throughout the country.
This variety blooms pale-blue flowers that increase in color intensity to a near-black center. The Giant Blue Jay has a firm, hardy stem that grows to a height of up to 4-feet before blooming. Advanced gardeners know that removing the faded spikes on the stem encourages further bouts of blooming throughout the mid to late summer season and into as late as early fall.
The Giant Blue Jay enjoys a sunny part of the garden with little shade and grows in well-drained soil with no need for additional nutrients throughout the season.
