Step 3: Prepare the Soil
The first step for a gardener after you have selected the type of raspberry plant you would like to cultivate in your garden is to prepare the soil. Don’t assume that the soil is already perfect for planting because in the majority of gardens this isn’t the case.
Start off by removing any weeds, stalks, and rocks from the soil and work through it until the soil has a loose, free-flowing consistency. A few weeks before planting, work a layer or two of compost into the ground to enrich the soil with the essential nutrients which will come in handy for newly-developing raspberry plants.
Choose a spot that doesn’t get access to too much wind or water; while most berry plants love water, they don’t like to be “wet” in their chosen sport and this can lead to rot under the surface. To block off the wind, consider hedges or bushy barrier plants like lavender.
