Step 5: Protecting Fig Trees
Fig trees are one of the easiest trees to grow even though it’s a common misconception for gardeners that it’s the opposite – although this doesn’t mean that you can just plant an assortment of fig trees in your garden and leave them be, they still require protection against the elements if you want to keep your trees happy, especially in harsher climates or areas exposed to wind.
This becomes more true with newly-planted fig trees in areas that might get a lot of wind: Support your fig trees by tying the stem to a stick planted in the ground. Sometimes this can be life or death for many trees in the event of a storm.
Fig trees should also be protected against elements like bugs and birds: Netting can help to protect it against most of the birds and insects that will affect your fig trees. For everything else, use tobacco or coffee-based anti-insect spray.
