Winter Squash is a beautiful vegetable garden plant with very strong climbing and bushy leaves, which are native to Europe and Asia but now grows wild across the United States and other parts of the world. The winter squash plant has two kinds: Sweet & Sour and Vineggy. Sweet Squash is a hybrid variety with seeds that can be planted in the spring as a biennial and will bear fruit in late summer and early fall. They are somewhat smaller than Vineggy Squash and produce slightly larger and bushy fruits.

Winter Squash is tolerant of alkaline conditions but not of acid, so it is best to keep it away from moisture until after it’s frost. It will do fine in some shade during the day but it does better if it has full sun or partial shade during the afternoon and evening. It needs a lot of water as it grows but don’t water it too often. Any time you see moist or soggy parts on the leaves or dirt, water immediately. Follow all of the home care instructions on the packaging of your chosen winter squash plants.

It is a very early spring when most squash plants start to produce their crop. The best time to harvest them is in late July to early August since they are very sensitive to cold weather at this time of year. In addition to being a great vegetable garden plant, winter squash is a terrific way to get kids interested in growing plants and taking care of gardens. They are also a great addition to your organic garden as companion plants in combination with other varieties such as Bell Peas, Endive, Shasta Sweet potatoes and strawberries.

Winter Squash Plant is very tough and hardy. They can tolerate some drought conditions, although you may have to give them extra water in the summer to help with pest problems. The majority of varieties are tolerant of light shade but there are still some that are sensitive to full shade so keep that in mind when choosing where to place them in your yard. There is one tip you should always keep in mind when caring for your squash plants during the winter season, and that is to make sure you fertilize them. If you do not fertilize them, your fruit and leafy vegetables will not grow properly.

Winter Squash should be divided up after harvesting them so that the squash seeds do not become too crowded. You can store the seeds in a single bag or spread them out about halfway. Make sure that they have enough room to grow because as they mature they will begin to produce fruit which can weigh quite a bit depending on the variety. It is best to spread them out a little at a time until they are no longer than 2 inches tall. There are some varieties such as butternut and red butternut that will produce small fruits, but they are not very resistant to pests so be sure to purchase those varieties that are more resistant to pests.

In late summer it is important to begin eating your fruit because it is ready for freezing by the end of summer. When preparing your fruit for freezing you can soak them overnight in water but you should place them out so that they can breathe and stay cool. You do not want them frozen to death do you?
